The Germans did a wonderful job of placing the oil filter. I remember the b.s. hassle it was to change the oil in my GM cars. You had to jack the vehicle up, stick jack stands under it, and pull out one of those stupid ring-like tools.

Once you got the "tool" to stop slipping and jammed the filter loose (usually smashing your hand on the oil pan in the process), hot oil would come splashing out all over the ground (and your arm) as you tried tried to wrestle the scalding hot filter into the drain pan. Damn Americans ;-)

With the M, that's not an issue. You don't even have to lift your car off the ground. Just get an extension bar, put the pan under it, and loosen it. The filter's a cinch.
