FWIW: Try popping your hood up after an hour of driving in pouring rain, A LOT of WATER in gets under the hood.

Now about washing....I use simple green on a warm motor. When you rinse, use a semi-gentle spray nozzle...and DONT aim directly on any component that has wires running all over it...so that would be about the top of the motor where the coils/plugs are...

SIMPLE GREEN is sold at just about every auto parts store as a degreaser. It works great to take off grime and such and works great on wheels.

BUT, note, it'll take the wax off a car fast so careful with overspray. No it won't hurt the paint...but you get the jist.
