I think BMW makes and has made several good "non-M's," including the 1996-99 328i, the modern 540i, the 330i, etc. These are well worth the money and have the same excellent engineering as our Ms, albeit without the performance gear.

In fact, when my friends complement my '97 M3 and say they want to get one like it, I'll tend to steer them towards a 328i of the same vintage if they're just looking for quality transportation. In daily driving, a 328i would do the same job for less money. Spending an extra 4-5k on an M3 doesn't make much sense for non-enthusiast. All IMHO of course.
