in the "On" position (w/out engine running). If key is in the On position, sending units are priming w/no fuel causing them to burn up. I've had the sending units (I think there are 2) replaced twice. Once @ 20k and again @ 30K. While the guage had a mind of its own, it never read there was MORE gas than there actually was. It was either accurate...or on E with light on. Sometimes it would jump back and forth 5 times within 10 seconds. Rick...if that is the case with you, go back..get it fixed and have them give you your $100 back. Or have them apply it towards something else (like a couple of intermittent oil changes, T-shirts, BMW mugs,???) It's easier to get credit than a refund from BMW.
