yeah you have to push the brake to shift into gear and to go from neutral into gear. if you pop off the little panel around your shifter, you can actually see the electric solenoid move when you push the brakes. i haven't tried disconnecting it. it looks easy though. you need a allen wrench to take the shifter knob off, then use a small flat screw driver to pop off the little panel around the shifter.
