I've also heard of places that will recondition the seats by replacing components of the seat. For example, they might pull out the seat, remove the bolster, replace just that piece and resurface it, then put the seat back in.

I was told this could be done in my previous car where the side bolster and seat bottom wore terribly despite careful care (took seven years, though) - I sold the car though to get my M3 before I had it fixed. So I can't vouch for it, but it sounded like it can do a nice repair with a greatly reduced cost when compared to replacing the entire seat.

The gent who told me this was a shop owner (of course!) who did an excellent job replacing my convertible top. He guaranteed the work as well and did great work on the top so I would consider it; as with anything you want to find a reputable person to do the work.
