it can be quite bad for the paint.

Even bird crap left on the car for an hour will leave a mark in the paint.

If the paint is really scratched deep there is nothing you can do. Otherwise you can take it to a detailer and see what he can do with a wool pad. I wouldn't recommend trying to do anything yourself if it is deep. Can you feel the scratch with your hand? If you can...then it is really too deep to do anything.
