I have been getting a check engine light after 55K miles. My independent mechanic has read the fault codes as being related to the secondary air pump and tells me this is there to pump in extra air during cold starting. Although this is a very competent shop, they feel it's likely too big a job to be worthwhile, and recommended only clearing the fault code periodically. Apparently water gets in to the system over time from condensation or some such thing, and the secondary pump is not really needed for most operation. Does anyone have any experience with this? Is there anything else I can do to clean the system out? Any help is appreciated.

Are you getting a high pitched wine from the pump that is based on the rev's on the car? I heard it is only need when the car is cold and it needs more air. The dealer told me the same stroy that condensation gets in there over time and wrecks it. The wine goes away on mine when the car heats up.
