In Reply to: HOW MUCH IS IT TO REPLACE CLUTCH PEDAL BUSHINGS? posted by justin on September 09, 2001 at 23:00:28:

I have 2 sets (!) of UUC delrin bushings laying around the house, never bothered to put them in. All places I've asked charge at least 2 shop hours, as it apparently is pretty difficult to get to. Here is my wisdom :).

1st fact. Replacing the bushings with BMW OEM ones will not cure the problem, it will at best delay it.

2nd fact. Replacing the bushings with the UUC delrin ones will get rid of the side-to-side movement of the clutch arm. The squeak comes from that but also someplace else (see below).

3rd fact. The infamous squeak, at least in my car, also comes from the clutch pedal spring, which is covered in a little ribbed rubber boot.

I just used White Lithium grease on the (stock) clutch bushings and on the spring (I lifted the rubber thingie to get to it). That grease (available in a spray can from any auto-parts store) sprays on as a penetrating liquid, then solidifies to a white waxy thing and will not run off like WD40. Just apply liberal quantities of it, you should be fine (total time DYI about 5-10 minutes, including removal of underdash panel).

Replace the bushings mostly to get rid of that lateral play. I'll do it whenever I have $200 burning a hole in my pocket.

I am sick of my loud squeaky clutch and I want to replace the bushings so that the thing will shut up... I don't have the tools (or probably enough knowhow) to do it myself, so I was wondering how much the dealer would charge me to do it.... Anyone know a reasonable price?????
