Waiting 90 days will not help you avoid the tax. I believe the car has to be purchased like 8-9 months ago. I looked into this a while back but do not recall all of the details. I will tell you the CA sales tax is tough to avoid unless you keep the car registered in the state of purchase for a while.

If I purchase a car out of state, is there way I could avoid paying the sales tax? I understand if you wait 90 before registering you can avoid the tax? Any comments??
Thanks,
