In Reply to: M3 Rough Idle on startup--normal? posted by JST on September 13, 2001 at 19:14:04:

s52 M3s. My car does the same thing. The O2 sensors need to warm up to smooth out the engine. I'd only be concerned if you get a check engine light or some other diagnostic warning consistently at startup.

Looking at a 98 M3C. On initial startup on a damp day, the engine idled rather roughly for 15-20 secs. before settling down. IIRC this is a normal feature of the S52 engine--correct?

Also, what are the warning signs (if any) of over-rev caused damage? Is there any way to check for this other than scanning the computer?
