This has happened to me a couple of times, so maybe you were in a similar situation as I was. Then only time is has happened to me is when I would shift into 2nd too quickly and not fully engague the gear. To most everybody out there it can feel and sound like you have shifted normally, but what you have actually done is goten the gear selector stuck on the synchro, and the pressure from shifting so fast (and then loading the gear so fast) means that it takes a few seconds (Seems like a LONG time) for the gear to be "popped" into neutral. Also, because you have your foot on the gas, the load from the engine is keeping the synchro semi-coupled with the gear, so the engine power does make it to the wheels for awhile...

Now I know you say that the gear was all the way in, but are you sure that you didn't just shift it onto the synchro? Sometimes even when shifting slowly the synchro will hit the gear, but not line up at all (i.e. difficult to shift into first at a standstill) Rare, but possible.

Hope this helps
