I have a '95 M3 and a 2001 S4 Avant. I find both the BMW and the Avant similar but different. I think the build quality on the S4 is a bit better - but this is kinda subjective. It is not a whole lot better. I find folk's perception of the 2 cars VERY different - If I am in the BMW I am either cool or a jerk cuz I drive a BMW, If i am driving the S4, I am largely unnoticed - which can be a good thing since I occasionally find myself driving a wee bit faster than the poster limit :-)
The interesting point is that I think Porsches are built a whole LOT better than either BMW or Audi - I just sold a 944 Turbo S. No comparison. The Porsche is, out of the box, ready to be put on a track and go like hell - that is what it was made for. The M3, well I got to fix the suspension points that might break, I got to add a stiffening X-brace, cuz the factory was to cheap to do it - I need to do a number of things to help the reliability of the car!
The Audi is not that bad, but it really is not the same on the track as the M3 - or at least the perception is that it isn't. Another interesting perception thing is that in a Porsche, folks just think its a nice car.
FWIW: any German car is FAR better on the track - in terms of reliability than the Japanese cars (except perhaps the latest Supra TT) I have had a 300ZXTT and a MR2 Turbo on the track and they really didn't last.
That said, my wife and I have a Audi TT, BMW M3, BMW M6, Audi S4 and until recently Porsche 944 Turbo S - So I guess I/We find things to enjoy in all of them
as said before, just sold my 95 M3 for a 2001 S4... what will i miss? opinions please, i have been an S basher for a long time previous to test drive, so i can take it :)
