I heavier weight oil will help with any knocking or noisy engines. Therefore, I should be switching to a heavier oil. Switching to a lighter wieght oil will allow less stress on the engine, but lighter oil's are more prone to viscosity breakdown, knock and pings (sythetics are another story).

What do you mean by more mainstream oils? You don't know what type of oil I use. which is BTW castrol 20-50. Is that not mainstream?

And what do you mean by "masking some problem"? What is being masked by using BMW recommended oil? I don't understand your statements or your logic.

Please help me out here. I guess you are suggesting in some way or form through your statement that you use synthetic so I must also do so? Is that what you are getting at?
