<1. If you're using 20/W50 oil, that's already about as thick an oil as anyone might want to use on these cars (and is probably decreasing your engine's performance slightly becasue it's so thick)...so moving to a thicker oil to further "mask" whatever problems the engine has developed would be detrimental...
--- See the problem is that I've taken it to 4 independants. None of them seem to know the prob off hand. BMW charged me over $1000 to just check, and they still don't know. They brought in a new DME for me also. My Friend checked the car out too and did it for me as a favor (he is an independant BMW mech) and had the car for 2 1/2 weeks: Nothing was found.
2. You use whatever oil you want, I am not your father!! :)
---- Oh I know that. =)
3. All I meant about the oil weight I use was that if I'm using 5W30 synthetic and I'm not hearing pinging, then maybe you should be worried about more than how to quiet the pinging with oil weight...I might instead be concerned about WHAT'S causing the pinging and how extensive is it? Noise like that can only cause damage...
---- But there is nothing thicker than straight 50. The reason I want to do this, is to see if the prob goes away. I hear ya now about masking any probs. The thing is, I am thinking of switching to Valvoline straight 50 racing oil. This would "mask" =) any problem the DME sees. And also, if it is the prob, it would help alleviate the motor if their is something wrong, because then it means it is a friction prob.
Take care
