The first one must have had something wrong with it, the 2nd one too, because the 95s are known to be more free flowing at high speeds than the 96+, but the 96+ do have more torque, not much, I think around 11lb ft. With bolt ons the most you could get is prob around 280hp,(the you'd have to go to cams or forced induction) not too bad though. And you've probably already heard if you want to mod it the year to get is 95. Good luck.
