I'm confused, you said...."I don't consider stuff such as Navigation system, power seats, and other electronic gadgets that you don't use more than once per day luxury items. They're just something for one to show off.
Thats exactly what luxury is......shit you can show off. Of course you don't need a Navigation system. Not many do people do. How often are you really driving somewhere when you don't know where you are. Anyways you cant say that those type of options are not "luxury".
Okay, I get to make some comments since I've been in/driven both S4s and M3s before.
The S4 is a nice car. Interior wise, the car looks gorgeous and beautiful. However, I found the seating position more like a regular sedan than a sport oriented GT car. Not that the M3 is uncomfortable, but once you compare the two, you'll find out that you'll be a lot happier as a driver in a M3. The S4 felt like a compact Mercedes in a way.
Also, BMW has better ergonomics. The dash allows you to reach all the buttons more easily and lets you concentrate in driving. Unlike the Audi, it does not remind you that it's supposed to be a luxury car, even though the M3 already has a lot of luxury amenities such as leather seats, On board computer, power windows, sunroof, etc. I don't consider stuff such as Navigation system, power seats, and other electronic gadgets that you don't use more than once per day luxury items. They're just something for one to show off.
Performance wise, the S4s are somewhat faster in straight lines. But so what? If the M3 had a turbo, it would've dusted the Audi. Besides, most average drivers prob. aren't good enough to tell the 0.5 sec. difference anyway.
Styling wise, you've already stated that the M3 looks meaner. And it does. The S4 seems too mild in appearance and in my opinion, looks better with a female driver in it.
The bottom line is, you should compare the two side by side to see what the differences really are. If you care about hp/torque figures, get the S4. If you want the BMW reliability and the Motorsport's fame/heritage, then get the M3. You can always put in a navigation system in your M3 if you decide to have more gadgets in your car later.
By the way, Audi S4s are rumored to experience turbo failures. I have no ways of confirming this but I wouldn't be surprised if a M3 can outlast a S4 more than twice of its life time.
Don't get me wrong. M3s aren't perfect. The Vader seats, for example, are prone to cracks after a while. But it shouldn't be a problem if you enter/exit carefully and lexol the seats often. Earlier M3s also suffer from water pump, O2 sensor and clutch problems but I am sure Audis have little problems of their own as well.
I hope you're convinced by now.

Ok .. here is the deal .. i know there have been a lot of posts on this before .. but im trying to decide between a 2000 S4 and a 98-99 M3 ...
I'd like to hear your thoughts as BMW owners about the M3 .. looked in the archives, but didnt see much except immature responses like .. "the audi is a glorified volkswagon" .. even if this is true, i'd like to stick to the facts about the two car, and not try to name call. So what makes the M3 better then the S4 ..
Granted the M3 looks a lot meaner then the S4 .. but the Audi seems to be a better with its AWD, 6 spd, turbo, and it's more refined interior .. ok thanks .. bye
