Years ago, they said it was fine to mix different brands of dino with others. Said was fine, assuming that you used the same weight (5W30).

And I suppose you can fudge a bit on the weight. As long as you don't mix any sand in, and use similar weights, you should be fine.

The risk is in an incompatibility of additives, which almost has to be near zero. Having said this, I keep a few quarts of BMW oil around to top up after a dealer oil change.


I have BMW 5W30 synthetic in my engine. Is it ok to top up with a different brand synthetic, say Mobil 1?
