I went through the same dilema a couple of months ago. I needed new front Pilots and the Tire Rack could not explain the difference between the Y and Z versions. They assured me that the Zs were not older inventory that they were trying to move out. They said the constructiion was the same. At that time the pricing was identical for Z and Y. I ended up with the Z since the car has Zs on the rear. One thing to be aware of with these Pilot Sports vs the original Pilots is that they flat spot much more readily. ie. when I park the car overnight, about 12 hours, and then use it the next morning, the tires rumble for about 7-10 miles until they become round again. Very annoying. The tires are very good otherwise.

I just noticed that Tirerack is carrying our Pilot Sports in both a Y and a Z rating, with about 30 bucks different in cost. Would there be a problem using the cheaper Y rated on the rears, and my current Z rated ones on front?
