transmission oil? Does anyone use mobil 1 ATF syn (archive)

mobil 1 ATF synthetic in there 5 speed. The container says for auto transmission but the guy at the counter said that auto and manuel tranny oil is the same as long as it is dexron 3 or better. Does any know if this is true? My car is a 1998 M3, 5 speed. Thanks in advance...
