Not to start the platform wars here, but have you considered using OS X? Its the Mach 3.0 microkernel underneath FreeBSD 4.4 when you get right down to it.
There's a great terminal app with your choice of shells, plus some seriously technical network tools. I don't use the command line much because of the excellent Aqua GUI on top, but its definitely there, and it runs just about any *nix package out there. Plus you have the advantage of being able to run about 20,000 Mac programs, and another 50,000 PC programs under Virtual PC 5 (connectix.com for more info). You can program in quite a few languages including C++, Objective C, FutureBasic, RealBasic, and a bunch of others. The native programming environment is based on Obj C and its called Cocoa. You get a full suite of program development tools with the OS too.
I hadn't done any programming in at least ten years, yet within a few minutes using Cocoa I had built a working text editor.
