In Reply to: Poll: Would you get SMG tranny on new E46 M3? posted by YLO///M3 on December 31, 2001 at 14:33:06:

I'm just curious but I was thinking about his yesterday. A friend of mine is getting an E46 M3 convertible because his 3 month old Boxster S is too small for his new baby and I mentioned he should check out this option.

I know there are probably a lot of diehard manual transmission fans here and I'm one too, but I think this is the way of the future. F1 uses them and I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes the top choice in 5 years or so.

Just looking for opinions. Why would you get it or why would you stay away from it?

It would be very tempting to go with the SMG option, but if I track my car 6 or 8 times a year then I would be very concerned about how the SMG would hold up under those conditions in the long term. Sure it would be nice in traffic, but I didn't buy the car just to drive it in traffic. I am sure that the SMG is the way of the future, but until I know that it is as reliable as the manual I will stay with stick. However if you never drive it that hard it would be the thing to get.
