I went through the firewall right along the main wiring harness behind the fusebox. Here are some basic steps:

1) using a torx-head screwdriver, remove all 4 screws that hold the fuse box top onto the base.
2) remove the underdash panel on the driver's side.
3) get a metal coat hanger and bend it so it's straight. Using a file or grinding wheel, round the end so as not to have any sharp edges.
4) from inside the car, push the metal hanger through the center of the wiring harness as it goes through the firewall into the fusebox (it'll take a few tries and some wiggling).
5) when the hanger appears in the fusebox, tape the nylon vacuum hose to it and pull it through into the passenger compartment.
