If you are reading this in US magazines, they are obviously talking about the lower HP 240 model. We have been dying for a real ///M motor for some time. I bet they are also talking about the slight differences between 'regular' E36 models and the M3 (visualy and otherwise). People still remember the E30 m3 which was a completely different car than the 325. Now the E46 has some of the similar diffences that the E30 had. i.e. flared fenders, chassis, suspension geometry, and other things...

If you read that in a European magazine, I can't help ya there. FYI, the US motors actually stack up quite well to their bigger brothers with a few modifications. (hint: look at the torque numbers) Really the Euro motors benifit from a higher redline (and more top end power too), that's part of what gives them amazing horsepower numbers.
