Would you like to hear a solo singer come from the center of your dash or hood, or do you prefer they sound like they are on your driver's door? OK, this is a little exagerated, but you get the point.
The ideal spot to listen to any speaker system is centered in betwen them. The goal is to keep path lengths between the ears and speakers equal.
In the bimmer, the left mids and tweets are like 1.5 feet from your head and the right side ones are more like 4 feet.
The speakers closer to you are going to sound louder, for one, which draws that solo singer to you door rather than the center of the dash or hood.
Also the sound from the left speakers will arrive sooner that the right speakers. this will screw up the image. By that I mean in a sweet setup (equal path lengths), you can hear the soloist coming from an exact point on your dash. when the sound from the speakers arrives at different times, the point is smeared left to right somewhat.
Also, with the tweets that far from the kick-panel drivers, you will run into other phasing issues and may lose some midrange/midbass detail.
I work in Mountain View, if you ever want to audition my system. I remember you said you are in the SF Bay area.
In the next couple weeks, I will be installing a digital phase procesor. It has fiber optic inputs for my head unit and 20-bit Sign Magnitude D/A converters. It will also Phase-align the subwoofer and provide digital delay so I can delay the driver's side speakers and the rear fill channels, If I ever use rear fill. It should sound sweet.
