BMW told me to run non-synthetic oil in my 95M3 (archive)

The dealer service rep, and mechanic said this. They said that the M3 burns quite a bit of oil, so the thicker non-synthetic was the best for it. Even the manual says the M car burns more oil then the the other 3's because of the engine design. But can I still run synthetic and just add oil more often? And what exactly is it in the design that makes it burn more oil?

This is my first M3. Does anyone have any opinions on this?
