"Even the manual says the M car burns more oil then the the other 3's because of the engine design. But can I still run synthetic and just add oil more often? And what exactly is it in the design that makes it burn more oil?"

You know something funny? It's odd how many assuptions for the negative people so quickly make if a behavior is observed...

but how quickly opinion changes to fact once some minor experimentation occurs.

But anyway...

Yeah some M-cars (and yes even reg. 3-series ones too) burn roughly 1qt of oil every 600-1500 miles.

I personally have tried reg. Castrol 5w-30, Mobil Synthtic 5w-30, and the Castrol "Clean Drive Blend."

And all 3 of those evaporated in my 1996 M3 at around 1qt/800 miles.

One day on a sheer fluke, I chaged the oil using Castrol Synthetic 5w-50. Note the 50.

Not my car uses 1 quart every 2000 miles.

What do you do?

Keep an oil on the oil level about every 2 weeks (as you should) and try the Castrol Synthetic.
