a 15 weight equals a 15 weight regardless wether its synthetic, fossil, or ketchup.

My M uses a quart per every 3000.

If you have to add oil frequently the advantage of synthetic is limited and using a standard fossil based oil is fine unless you are tracking the car.

I can only guess at the reason an M engine would use more oil than standard production. Some manufactures (porsche) have use Magnesium/aluminum/steel in their engines to save weight. problem is diffent expansion rates. solution is to machine more clearance at cold and have the engine tight at normal temperature. this will/would lead to oil consumption at start up. I don't think bmw does this and its not as much a problem in water cooled engines.

I think this is more a safety phrase to get rid of a customer complaining about oil. "look, said right in the manual, thats normal, now go away". You notice they don't quantify high oil use. Internal oil use doesn't get fixed without engine disassembly so you can see they want to avoid this.
