As a new owner, there are a few things to watch out for - (1) Water pump - if it hasn't been replaced, change it now. The 95 era pumps can fail any time after 50K. The impeller disintegrates, leading to $everal hundred in other problems. The new pumps are either metal impellers or an upgraded plastic part. It's a two hour DIY job. Be sure you don't buy old stock and get the old style pump. I would recommend getting your pump from Steve at www.ultimategarage.com or Paul at South BMW Miami paul.mclauglin@soutbmw.com. (2) Rear shock mounts (RSMs) - the rubber mount of the shock to the body. OEM bits fail about every 30 to 40K depending on how you drive. Get the Ground Control lifetime RSMs for $99. www.ground-control.com. (3) Radiators are a 100K mile item - the plastic inlet neck breaks. Will fail earlier if the car has ever been overheated. Also beware that there was a radiator cap recall on these cars. Make sure yours has been changed.
The e36 M3 is an incredibly robust and reliable car, which requires little more than routine maintenance, save for the above items. Welcome and enjoy your car.
