: The trans (2d gear) on a recently acquired E28-M5 is toasted. I wanted to replace it with another M5 trans but they're incredibly scarce and expensive. I've been told a std 535 trans can be fitted in its place and would like to hear from anyone who might have experience with this approach. Also, if anyone has a good used/rebuild original trans, please contact me.
: Thanks all,

The E28 M5 use a 3.71 diff so you need the
overdrive 5 sp box from the 535.
If you changed to a CR box you would need to go to a 3.07 diff to get a equivalent ratios.
Since the M5 box has slighty different ratios to
standard 5 sp I would look seriously at getting yours fixed-best keep it factory.
