: : I'm looking to buy either a 1990 535i (5 spd) or a 1991 M5.

one word: HUGE Don't bother with the upgrades to a 535i, you couldn't get halfway there. the E34 M5 is a handbuilt, stiffened (body/chassis), custom
limited production run car, never to be repeated. The 535i is a nice sedan with a strong motor and adequate suspension, but the M5 is truly a supercar that uses the E34 body and chassis bits. The suspension, brakes, wheels, steering, seats, exclusive trim bits, ad finitum....You should be able to get a nice M5 for $22k or less, probably 80-130k miles, but for your wallet's future, have the M car checked by a wrench who knows the M5. It will be the best car you will ever drive.EVER.
