Yes, "slightly" is the key word. The M3 should be within 2% of the interior space of the M5 since the E46 sedan is 90.8 cu ft and the M5 is 92.5 cu ft. Oddly enough, the E46 also has a bit MORE leg room in the back seat.

A 340HP M3 will lag behind some chevy's and dodges on the market if it can only muster a 4.8 second 0..60. Why concede performance leadership even more? I haven't heard anyone argue a 5 series should be slower than a 7 series because it is $20k less, so why treat M3 and M5 differently?
One last word of advice, probably would be a good idea not to put the suggestion about lowering horses on the M3 board unless you want to start a war ;-)
