Downshift braking w/Steptronic--BAD for tranny? (archive)

Hi guys,
I've been driving my '99 540iA/Sport for about 1.5 years now, and lately when I shift manually, I've been braking by downshifting as I approach a stop. For instance, coming up to the stop in 3rd, I'll shift into 2nd, which brakes the car significantly, saving the brakes.

So what I'm worried about:
Am I braking the car, or am I BREAKING the car? :)

That is, I'm worried that it may cause excess wear on the auto tranny's clutch. I'd rather wear the brakes than the tranny, in that case.

Does anyone have any knowledge on this?

Thanks in advance,
Jason (Palo Alto, CA)
