Give them 80K and you will get a new MZ3 which can do the quarter mile in 13.2. That's MSRP on a new MZ3 + 37K to get a little faster that an M5. Seems expensive to me.
What's interesting that that they talk about producing 50 Factory Works M5's with 550-600hp. Sounds like their really getting into understanding and modifying most aspects of the car, at a large price tag of course. I'm sure some of the modifications add hp at almost no risk. But how about supercharging? What does this do to reliablity? I recently saw a Dinan badged M3 towed into Steven's Creek BMW and wondered what went wrong. What's the feeling on pumping up the hp to 600, and maintaining reasonable reliability? Has anyone supercharged their M5 yet?
I also get the Roundel and just read the same article. I have some experience with Dinan and supercharging. I bought a 1998 M3 in December of 1997, and when my local dealer became Dinan authorized in June of 98, I was the second person in Houston to get my M3 supercharged. It was problematic at first... we went through 2 superchargers before we got one that lasted. Dinan was getting his superchargers from Powerdyne at the time and that version had some technical problems. I have to say however that the total experience with both the dealer and Dinan was outstanding. They installed a new supercharger a third and last time and the car was virtually maintenance free (in terms of the upgrades) for the duration afterwards, which was up till now. Therefore, once we got over the hump with the technical difficulties with the superchargers, we were solid as a rock. Dinan now uses a different manufacturer - Vortec. I understand from a friend who has a supercharged M3 that his has been rock solid since day one.
Bottom line, while I owned the M3 ( I am now the proud owner of a 2000 Imola Red M5) the time which I had it while it was supercharged were some of the best times I ever had with any car ever in my life. I always had a big grin on my face every time I drove the car. It had a new personality once it was supercharged. One thing to remember about such a drastic HP increase... you will definitely need a better clutch. My M3 needed and benefited from a SACS racing clutch and aluminum flywheel. I am sure the M5 will need other mods to make sure the integrity of the car is maintained? Another tidbit on longevity... my mechanic did a compression test at around 50000 miles (40000 miles of supercharger bliss) and there had been no loss of compression on the engine what so ever!
I am not yet sure I will go through the Factory works program and get my M5 supercharged?? It is already fast as hell!!! however, 600 HP does give me a big hard on!!
Dinan is a class act and the dealers who are authorized (at least mine) are very good. They and Dinan stand behind the upgrades just as if they were done at the factory.
I may just have to be one of the those 50 people Steve Dinan said would have a 600 HP M5??? only time will tell... I think I will wait however to see how the first couple go??
