How does the oil service indicator work? Does it

a, check the quantity of the oil,
b, check the quality of the oil, or
c, check a max amount of time since last oil service?

If you are changing oil every 3K miles and if the sensors are checking for a and b, then the light should never come on. Right? There must be other sensor checking other items, no?
