Lawrence,

My stepson has a '99 E55, which I've had the opportunity to ride in many times and drive a few times as well. I recently bought a '00 M5, and it's the right car for me. Both cars zero in on the concept of high-performance luxury, but each comes from the roots of its parent company.

The M5 is definitely more fun, and will surprise you with just how sporting it can be. The E55 has impressive performance, but its forte is as a luxury sedan. I find the 6-speed on the M5 to be a real joy, as opposed to the Mercedes automatic. Both tend to understeer; I find the M5 easier to toss and control, with less body-roll in the corners and dive during braking. But that's the way I drive here in the Santa Cruz mountains.

Both cars are magic carpets, particularly the Mercedes, and I love the polished burl and black suede interior on my M5. I'd avoid the aluminum interior version, doesn't fit the car and there are QC problems as well.

You won't go wrong with either; it really boils down to what you want and expect from the car and how you drive.
