Seems like a very strange thing to do on a car that's not an M.

It can have M parts. My 1999 528i had it as well as some suspension parts.

What's odd to me is why it isn't that new wheel with the tiny control buttons.

Now I'm going to have to go check to make sure my M5 has the red stiching.

There is a different feel on the wheel. Thicker or something on the M5.
