As far as adding RPMs, how do you know when you're doing it right?

<<<<<<<< You'll know with experience.... Also, downshifting gets you ready for the next acceleration. You must learn this to fully enjoy the stick shift experience. I have never double clutched, you're only wasting time because you were early on the downshift in the first place.
You don't downshift at speed, you slow down with
brakes and enging to a suitable speed and then downshift. If I had to pick a point on the tach it would be below 3500 rpms although I've never looked at it this way and could be wrong.

I just know how and when, automatically, never burning clutch, brakes or engine over many many years.

I can't wait for the F1 type steering wheel and shifter, I understand it is more automatic for the novice. I can't say I've never tried it.

Finally, all this shifting should be smooth.
