Down shifting is a must for safety reasons. You should always be in the gear that is most appropriate for the speed you are traveling at.

So if you slow down, from 5th gear to second, while slowing down, at any point in time, you should be in a gear that will allow you to accelerate if needed. You do not want to find yourself in 4th gear going 20mph, and suddenly you need to switch a lane and zoom outa there... Not a good time to fumble the gears..

Should you use the engine to slow down the car? I use it downshifting to slow down, but I make sure the engine never goes above 3kRPM by using the breaks in conjunction. And when I drive down a long down slop, I definitely using the ending to slow the car down. If I was to use the breaks only, the pads would would over heat and glaze up
