I've got nearly 20K miles on my 2000 M5 now, perhaps more than any U.S. Y2K M5. I had to use the M Mobility System in the middle of the Nevada desert once and drove the repaired tire more than 300 miles before getting the tire replaced. I also made the trip from Las Vegas to Oktoberfest in South Carolina, putting on over 5,200 miles in 10 days (the majority of that in four days getting there and back, the rest in S.C.). No oil consumption issues, 20 mpg at 80 mph average speed, stopping only for gas. There is no better car for eating up miles. It's an executive jet.Having said that, I wouldn't want to travel "U.S. over the next 2 months" in an M5, as you suggested. Reason is simple: winter weather. My M5 has more than its share of little paint chips from all the highway miles. I don't mind terribly, as I bought it to drive, but I wouldn't subject it to snow, ice, sand and salt
intentionally. Let your bud's 540 suffer the
indignity.
Enjoy your trip.
