well i visited SpeakerWorks in Orange today. big mistake. my car goes in for a complete audio overhaul surgery on Monday.. what good is bass without MB Quarts at all four corners? :)

they will install 2 10s in a free-air setup, similar to what you see with the new M5 "enhanced bass" option. he actually recommends that over a sealed box for BMWs since the cars are so solid (and trunk so insulated) to begin with. he showed me pix from a 740i that they did in similar fashion. i was having a tough time giving up lots of cargo space to a big sub enclosure anyway. unlike my current setup, they will do a proper install on the rear deck (cutting openings, sealing it up, etc).

will report back on how it turns out.
