Ran, the M5 is such a tighter package than the 540. My dealer let me borrow his demo for a few days while I waited for my 2001 Lemans/Black sport and found the 540 to be a bit soft. I was worried that the M5 would be compareable but gladly I was wrong. The M5 is incredialblly strong in any gear, has a firm ride but is not punsishing on the body. The steering feel is very solid and handling crisp and flat.

I too wanted an M3 but saw the M5 at BMW show during the Grand Prix in Montreal, and very glad that I chose the M5. If you need more info, email me.

I am considering the M5 instead of the M3 due to the delay. However I will not be able to test drive an M5. I drove the 540i 6 speed with sport and it had some neat power in 3rd but the ride and handling were not enough for me. In my opinion atleast the ride of my 328i sport E46 was a bit firmer than the 540i 6 sport and of course my 98 M3 is expectedly even better and firmer. Obviously the M5 will be more to my liking but is it substantially more firmer in suspension and does it have substantially more road feel than the 540i 6 sport - also for those who know, is it substantially firmer than the E46 328i sport too. I know it will probably not compare in steering because of the recirculating type rather than rack and pinion but.. what about all other issues and do they compensate atleast some for the steering too. Most important is turns, road feel etc.

Thanks for any and all constructive feedback.
