Before i begin, please do not flame. I am an enthusiast of both Mercs and BMW's and own a 330ci myself. I am just sharing something that i was fortunate to witness this weekend.
On Friday night, I had the chance to witness the most amazing race between the two greatest Sports Sedans in the world: a '01 LeMans Blue M5 with Lemans Interior and a '01 Silver E55 AMG with the two-tone white/black seats.
My friend George owns the E55 and his good friend has the M5. We had always talked about racing the two and seeing who would be the winner. Well, it finally happened on Friday night at 9:30 in a desserted parking lot. There were about 50 people there to witness this event and most people had their bets on the M5, including me.
Geroge and Dave (owner of M5) did not bet of course since they agreed it would be just for fun.
I have ridden in Geroges AMG many times and knew how fast it is for an automatic. We have raced 996's and Corvette's on the highway and were able to pull both of them. So i knew it was fast... But although I have never had the opportunity to sit in Dave's M5, i have always thought that the M5 would be quicker due to its 6 spd.
But on Friday night, something happened that no one expected. George (E55) beat Dave (M5). They ran their cars against each other twice and both times George beat Dave. Everyone was quite amazed. Geroge told me afterwards that at the start, he was able to beat Dave everytime, but by 50 mph, the M5 would gain speed although it could never pas the E55. Their top speed was about 80 due to the limits of the parking lot, but at the end of the strip, the E55 was always about 1/2 - 3/4 carlengths ahead.
I have to admit that both these cars are unbelievable and I wanted to congratulate anyone who is fortunate enough to won either one of these cars. My wish is to be able to own one of them one day.
This race has not changed my opinion on either cars. If the E55 had lost, i would still think that it was one of the best sedans in the world.
But i read a lot of the posts from people who have M5's saying that they can *always* beat an E55 or that the E55 is not considered a real car because of its slushbox. Friday night has proved to me that the E55 is indeed very fast and has the best auto tranny in the world. The M5 will always be the best 6 spd sedan in the world. I guess it really just comes down to what preference you have.
