Tell him why you feel he should not over price.
I'll list a few of my own to get you started.
I've bought 2 BMW's from the same dealer the past year. First was the M3 Convetible, Second was the M5. For both of those vehicles I paid MSRP. My salesman made it clear, that the dealership will not haggle on vehicle prices. They will be sold at MSRP only. Reason? It allows them to provide a higher level of service for everyone.
The sale of a car is not the end. You have to have a competent service department as well. You cannot do this if you have more sales going under MSRP than the one's you have going above. Which may explain why John is asking above MSRP. Trying to cover that shortage?
Understand as well, there is a built in profit margin with MSRP. If a dealership is having trouble with other sales it may try to cover by increasing prices on more popular models.
Does not mean we have to buy from them. Also means that unless he has a customer already willing to purchase the car at that price, he will lose more than he will gain.
Nothing against you John, you have the right to ask whatever you think you can get for a vehicle. Just don't expect a love affair with those owner's who paid MSRP which is the "Fair Market Value" they incurred.
On the other question you rose John. If someone offered me $100,000.00 for my M5 would I take it?
Yep, and then go right back to my dealership and order another one at MSRP. That way the profit is spread around.
