The buttons are for Seat warmers, DSC, and Sport mode. I don't believe that the 540 has these, just the ///M.

I don't understand why you are answering E39 questions as if you are an authority when you don't even have one. If you have information to share on drag racing, car care, or whatever it is you have expertise in, then please share it with us. But you have no business jumping in and answering questions that are outside your knowledge. It just wastes everyone's time and hurts your credibility.

As for the original questions, the 540i has optional heated seats (and thus, optionally, has those buttons) and all E39s have the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) button. The "Sport Mode" button is exclusive to the M5.
