Peter: not all M5 owners are as rude. But the first post is right, that M5 was probably not mod'd. It comes with almost 400hp stock along with 18" wheels and dual exhausts. Let me know if you want more info.

ps, you both got on it on the bridge??? that's a hefty ticket.

Thanks for your response. We were on Doyle Drive which approaches the GG from the SF side and runs between the Marina and the bridge. We weren't on the bridge but it still would have been expensive had we been caught.
I assumed the M5 had been modded because I'm not sure it was a 2001 car (didn't they have less HP before?), and I've run next to a 2001 M5 at freeway speeds and spanked him pretty good from 65 to about 100.
BTW, this guy was very cool, rolled down his window to ask about my car (after we slowed down some) and gave me a big thumbs up when I got off the freeway. His ego didn't seem assaulted by "losing" to my hot rod Volvo.
I confess I don't understand the rabid defense of a particular car. I'm into a particular car as much as it supports my passion for driving. Different cars do different things well and appeal to different parts of my interest in driving. M5s are great cars but so are a bunch of other vehicles.
I've always said that we are all a mixture of "driving people" and "car people". The pure "driving person" doesn't care what he/she drives as long as it's fun. The pure "car person" cares only about what type of car he/she drives and. Most people are a mixture of both but lean one way or the other. BMWs are great cars for the driving person, but sometimes the car person gets a little too emotionally invested... I choose to think it was the latter that were rude to me and certainly not indicative of the attitude of all BMW owners.
The new M5 weighs how much? And what type of torque does it produce?

Peter
