It doesn't have a clutch and can be left in auto mode or manual mode.

the SMG (short for Sequential M Gearbox) has a clutch, it just doesn't have a clutch pedal. It is a true MANUAL transmission, however the computer controls the clutch and gear change action. The driver tells the computer what gear to change into and the car does the rest. The advantage of an SMG over an automatic (or steptronic since that is just a fancy automatic) is that the SMG does NOT have a power robbing torque convertor....like I said, the SMG is a true MANUAL transmission. The only SMG type transmission offered in the US is on the Ferrari F1. I think I have heard Alfa or Fiat has one available in Europe, but I don't know that for sure.

As far as the SMG rumored to available in 2003 is NOT true. It is somebody's wishful thinking rather than what somebody has heard.
