BMW is using a water based paint and it chips easy (archive)

I just finished waxing (Klasse wax) my anthracite 2001 540. I have about 3,000 miles on it and live in the SF Bay Area.
I cannot believe the number of chips in the paint on the front bumper and hood. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I have not had the car in terrible conditions; I commute on the freeway about 40 miles (total) each day.

I can't imagine what it will look like in 10,000 miles.

Any comments or suggestions are appreciated.

I have a 01 M5 with 4000 miles. I also live in the Bay Area. Of all my BMW's are some kind of silver and the Anthracite is by far the worst for showing paint chips.
