I have a K40 installed and I have an Escort hanging from the windshield. I got stopped in Brunswick, Va, at a routine registration check. I didn't bother to turn off either detector. The state trooper "reminded" me that radar detectors are illegal in Va and I "reminded" him that my car wasn't registered in Va and we left it at that. Bottom line, register your auto in NC! :)

I used to drive thru VA frequently (from NC to C'ville) and finally stopped using my V1 because, it is my understanding that the VA State Police have "radar detector detectors". I know they are very aware of brake lights flashing when they trigger their radar.
I know they originally confiscated the radar detectors but that was ruled illegal years ago. I believe all they do now is give you a citation for having it.
Good Luck.
