New M5 Story (archive)

I have been reading this board for frequent M5-fixes while waiting a year for my own M5. I drove off in it a week ago Friday and have a brief story and a question or two.
I got on the waiting lists of both local dealers in February 2000. The first dealer where I had bought my 740iL told me I was 13th on the list and should get the car near the end of 2000 since they were getting about one/month and there would be some list drop-out. The other dealer told me I was 14th on the list and should expect a car early in 2001. I had visions of driving one and auctioning the other on ebay.

In October I get a call from the second dealer telling me I am number five on the list and to start getting excited. My calls to the first dealer go unreturned so I drop in. He tells me I am now 23rd on the list! Claims he just didn't have the up to date data. Then he gives me a printout of the wait list with names and addresses. (If you are on a waiting list do you want your info given out?) Then, after lying to me about the list, this first dealer calls me in December to report that I can order a car. One of this salesman's clients had passed and he was going to sneak me in as a swap at the point of sale.

Happily I had already ordered my car through the second dealer and was not even tempted by this new, unethical offer.

My car shows up in early March (Anthracite/Black) and we schedule delivery. Then I get the first call. Seems the wheels were 'scuffed' and he had to overnight new wheels so we postponed one day. Then I get the second call. I had asked the salesman if I could still get the rear badge removed. He said sure, they do it routinely. Half an hour before I am supposed to go pick it up he calls and says while they were prising it off the sharp lower-left corner nicked a 1mm square chip out of the paint. Three days to fix. You don't realize how emotionally attached you are until you have to wait THREE MORE DAYS!

So finally I get the car last Friday and couldn't be happier. Just as I had hoped it makes my 740 seem like the boat it was.

Three questions for the more-experienced:

1. What is a good repeatable method for adjusting the seats? I am 6'4" and have plenty of room but it seems that whatever setup I have there is always something not comfortable.

2. The tire pressure system is counter-intuitive. To initialize you press the button before starting, get the initialization message, then drive 'about 10 minutes'. There is no confirmation when the system starts working or that it is working. Pressing the button again while driving produces the message 'Tire Pressure Inactive' which evidently means I have turned it off and have to start over. Am I missing something?

3. I remember something about a danger of scratching the wheels in automatic car washes. Anything to that?

Thanks and good driving!
